During our staycation at Craven Grath Cottage in the middle of beautiful York Moor, we decided to visit Whitby. A town that was supposedly should only takes us 45 minutes by car.
The Journey
The drive was so smooth as silk. No traffic, no pollution both noise (just the sheep baa baa background noise) and no air pollution to in hale as we went passed the beautiful national park moor. There were many stunning scenery.
But then I spoke to soon! There were then a gang of bikers swopping at the side that went ahead fast passed us. Ethan got a little excited by this bikers gang as he has never seen so many bikes before.
As we approached Whitby, supposedly only 15 minutes to go, everything came to a halt. It was such a hot day. So hot that people on coaches were coming out and started walking on foot! We soon discovered that there was an accident ahead of us and the emergency helicopter has airlift the injured. How awful that must have been to the family. I really hope nothing serious has happened.
The traffic start flowing as normal, but the kids were getting agitated as it was lunch time. Soon we arrived at our destination, Whitby.
Whitby Abbey/ Dracula Castle
The first destination we wanted to visit was Whitby Abbey. This is part of the English Heritage. There were a huge car park next to the 13th-century gothic splendour abbey church ruins. We had to park there and then walked to the abbey. It took us about 5 minutes to get there. Although it was a supper hot day, the walk was a pleasant one. As you approached the entrance, you can see the sea view from the horizon. It was a spectacular view.
Before you enter, you have to of course pay for the tickets: £7.50 for Adult (with gift aid), £4.50 for Child (5-15 years), and free for the under 5. Free for those who are membership of the English Heritage of course. (I was not one of them yet! I think I better invest one right away!)
Once we were in, we were gazed at the mighty ruins. Being tourist, we took so many photographs there. Ethan has copied the other visitors by standing on the plinth and pretending to be a statue.
Evelyn soon followed suit.
Ethan wanted to go on this plinth, but as you can see it was too high.
Evelyn’s walking independency had gone up a notch!
Soon there was an old school style bell ringing “Oh-Yay Oh-Yay!”. The tourists gathered around and the story of Dracula was being act out and told through out the ground of the abbey. I was pleasantly surprised as I was not expecting this.
Ethan enjoyed it so much. He loves theatre play. This is more like of a pantomimed which gives lighten up the whole monastic surroundings to becoming a comical atmospheric one. It was Ethan first encounter of the Dracula. It was great.
Before we left, I can’t help but to take these stunning view of the abbey one last time.
It is been a wonderful visit. Ethan has learnt and seen new things, such as castle and Dracula. He was asking me if he could watch Vampire on the television the other day! I was like err… no… too scary! Scooba-doo will have to do for now.
Our next stop is Whitby Beach, but I think I will save this for another post. (Read here). Gives you something to look forward to. 😉

I lived in Whitby for a few years as a child – I’d forgotten how pretty it is – thanks for sharing x #whatevertheweather
Wish I can spend more time in Town Centre though. Perhaps, when it is a little less busy time of the year. xx
Whitby abbey looks amazing! Such a stunning ruin to wander around. Ethan and Evelyn look super cute as little statues, in fact they look cute in all the photos, lovely happy smiles showing what a wonderful time they are having. How cool that you got to see Dracula being acted out as well, I do love a bit of open theatre!
Thanks for linking up #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x
It was. I wish we don’t have to rushed off to the beach. We could have spent the whole day there. The kids really like running around, rolling down the hills and playing on plinths. It was eye opening for Ethan. He thoroughly enjoyed the open theatre. Thanks for hosting! 🙂 x
Oh my gosh your photos are stunning. You’ve captured such beautiful moments You are such a talented photographer. How cool to see Dracula being acted out as well. This place look incredible to visit. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It is really nice to hear as I have spent quite sometime editing the photos. Dracula was great. There were only three actors in the cast but they have acted out in so many characters, it was very impressive. About the accident, I know… I hope so too. Thanks for hosting. x
