Printing Feathers

It seem to be the norm now that whenever when we go out and about Ethan seem to be picking up lots of odd things he likes such as feathers, rocks, flowers, sticks and stones. You name it we’ve got them all. He would placed them in the buggy. By the end of each and everyday, I have noticeably have a collection of feathers in his arty corner. Here we decided to do printing out of them. It is also ideal for making wrapping papers for presents or even on fabrics too or just hang it up on the wall. So far, I have discovered 2 ways of printing methods.

First of all what you need:

Feathers, 1x A3 size paper, lots of scrap papers, a roller (optional, but recommended), acrylic paint. Also for later if you would like to turn it into a book cover then you would need 1x A4 size sketch book and a roll of film cover.

METHOD 1:  Individual Feather Printing

1. Paint on the feather.

2. Place the feather on a piece of paper.

3. Use clean scrap paper to place over and press hard with your hands or using a roller.

4. Remove the scrap paper gently. Then remove feather gently. Wait for paint to dry.

5. Repeated these stages with a different colour. Ethan has decided he wanted red.

Once the paint has dried, I turned it into his sketch book cover by placing a clear film sheet over it to protect it from any surface dirt and scratches.

But there is a faster way!

What you need:

Feathers, A4 size book, 1 x sheet of A4 blank paper, acrylic paint, a roller and some glitter (optional, but recommended)

METHOD 2:  Multi-Feathers Printing

Feathers Printing ethannevelyn.com1. Paint all of the feathers. With the painted side facing up, arrange them on a piece of blank paper the way you want your print to look like on your desired artwork, a canvas, paper, bags, etc. (As this will resulted in reverse or negative print). Here I have used a book. I have also mixed glitter with the paint to give that extra sparks.

2. Place the front of the book – face down onto the feathers.

3. Press hard. With hands and/ or with a roller. Here I have opened up the book to press against the back of the front page to make sure that the print is pressed.

5. Gently lift and remove the feather one by one. Wait for the paint to dry. Then there you have it! Voilà!
